NORA

I should have known this had been too easy. Should have known it wouldn’t last.

It all fell apart with one little nip. A playful nip that turned into a possessive bite. Not from Kolton, but from another male. The entire pack had stopped at a stream to slake their thirst, and the overeager male had caught us completely unaware.

The pain of the bite startled a yelp out of Storm. In a split second, that one little sound flipped the carefree mood on its head. Several more males reacted to the distress call, raising their heads to sniff the air. To sniff the blood now trickling from Storm’s neck. Storm jerked away from the wolf, but the damage had already been done.

She was injured and surrounded by predators whose instincts were to flush out all weakness.

Farther down the stream, Shadow’s head shot up. He took in the scene and immediately bared his teeth. Not at Storm, but at the males who were eyeing her hungrily. He growled, but the warning came too late.

Several wolves surged toward us en masse.

Storm! I cried in warning, but she was already moving. Already meeting the first wolf head on. Teeth and claws flashed. Fur flew through the air as they grappled for dominance. Snarls rang up and down the riverbed as more and more wolves joined the fight.

Storm was a whirlwind, dodging snapping teeth left and right. Every time a wolf got too close, she lashed out in fury, her claws and teeth finding purchase. More blood saturated the air, but not hers. Rather, from the countless males getting their butts kicked.

Hell, yeah! I whooped, despite the danger. My familiar was a vicious fighting machine. The fight only lasted minutes, but when it ended, her muzzle was covered in blood.

Sensing another wolf behind us, Storm whirled, ready for the next fight. At the sight of Shadow, she stopped short, just shy of biting his muzzle. His bloodied muzzle. Fat red drops fell from his mouth, as if he’d recently ripped into flesh. Storm flicked a sideways glance at the stream and found the wolf who’d first bitten her. A huge chunk of fur and flesh was now missing from his hide. Blood ran into the stream, darkening the water.

When he struggled to rise, several wolves pinned him back down with warning snarls. He cowered, thoroughly put in his place.

Storm looked back at Shadow, just as he stepped forward and licked her muzzle. She stiffened all over but didn’t move a muscle. He continued to lick, carefully cleaning the blood from her face. Then gently nosed the bite on her neck and licked that too. A tremor shook her body, but she held perfectly still. So did the other wolves. I didn’t say a word, too shocked by what was happening.

Shadow was taking care of Storm . . . and Storm was letting him.

Only when Shadow had finished cleaning her wound did anyone dare move. But not before he gave them all a look. Every single one of them.
